‘Dracula the Musical?’ pleases fans
The house was packed Friday, Nov. 7, at Macey Center. It was days after Halloween, but there were still several people dressed up as vampires.
Why? They were there to see the ABQStages production of “Dracula the Musical?”
ABQStages is a non-profit theater company, based in Albuquerque, created to provide quality theater productions for local stages.
The long running musical returned to Socorro for a second year, and the audience was well pleased.
A large part of the production involves audience participation — boos when the villain walks on stage, coos for the temptress, costumes for those who dared — and most everyone participated with vigor.
Prior to the show, a contest was held to judge the audience member with the best vampire costume. People were asked what was the big deal with vampires, why there is such an enthusiastic following for such blood-sucking fiends.
The general response was “Twilight,” the hugely popular TV series about teen vampires, which was developed out of the 2008 movie of the same name, and the 2005 novel.
The cast of the play was also asked about the vampire rage, and the general response was that is was mysterious, sexy and fun.
The play was a part of Tech’s Performing Arts Series, which continues Friday, Nov. 20, with a performance from Grammy-nominated folk singer, and former New Mexico resident, Eliza Gilkyson.
