Voting is now under way for two vacancies on the Socorro-Catron County Committee for the USDA Farm Service Agency election.

The Socorro-Catron Committee consists of five members. The two positions the election seeks to fill are LAA-1 in the southwest part of Catron County and LAA-4 in the northeast corner of Socorro County.

Committee members make decisions on such things as disaster and conservation payments, producer appeals and other local issues.

“The FSA county committee system is unique among governemtn agencies, because it allows producers to make important decisoins concerning the local administration of federal farm programs,” said Robbie Jones, executive director for the USDA’s Farm Service Agency for Catron and Socorro Counties, in a news release.

Newly elected committe members and alternates will take office on Friday, Jan. 1

Ballots were mailed out on Nov. 7, Jones said in the release. Eligible voters who did not receive a ballot can obtain one at the USDA Service Center located at 103 Neel Ave., or by calling 575-835-1710, ext. 2. Monday, Dec. 7, is the deadline to return ballots.

To be an eligible voter, farmers and ranchers must participate or cooperate in FSA programs. A person who is not of legal voting age, but supervises and conducts the farming operations of an entire farm can also vote.
