Barteau reports for duty at EDC
El Defensor Chieftain welcomes Suzanne Barteau to the editorial staff. She will cover the Socorro beat and general assignments.
Barteau already has close connections to the community, having served as assistant director of the Socorro County Chamber of Commerce, where one of her tasks was to produce the monthly newsletter.
Although she’s traveled the world over, Barteau said there’s no place she rather be than Socorro.
“I think I’ll probably be here the rest of my life,” she said. “I like living in a town where everyone’s your neighbor.”
An avid reader of the New York Times, fan of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and an amateur singer, Barteau said it was music that brought her to town two years ago. She has since performed solo and with a multitude of musical friends around the area.
Barteau spent most of her youth overseas, including such exotic venues as Taipei, Singapore, Germany, Luxembourg and the Dominican Republic. She returned to America as a high school sophomore, attended college at Barnard, in New York, but ultimately graduated from the University of New Mexico with a degree in history.
Almost a native, Barteau has lived in New Mexico more than 20 years, much of it in Catron County. But now, she’s zeroed in on Socorro.
“I don’t think I’ll ever leave. I own property here, have a kid in high school and another one at Tech and I’ve met a lot of great people here,” she said.
