Good Sam administrator to leave Socorro Dec. 18

In his three years in Socorro, Craig Thomes has often been mistaken for a college student. When he disappears from the scene on Friday, Dec. 18, many may assume he graduated and went home.

Despite his youthful appearance, Thomes is no student. As administrator of Socorro’s Good Samaritan Society, he’s been responsible for every aspect of the 66-bed facility, “Craig was frequently the subject of humorous ribbing,” said Bill Bottorf, past president of the Socorro Rotary Club. “We had fun with the fact that he was our youngest Rotarian and his job had him overseeing the well-being of Socorro’s oldest residents.”

As Socorro Rotary’s Youth Director, Thomes was in charge of coordinating the foreign student exchange program and other school-related activities, where he was sometimes at risk of being mistaken for one of the kids.

One thing Thomes is happy to have accomplished during his tenure at Good Sam’s is the much needed renovation of the kitchen.

It was a big project, which involved major structural repairs to the flooring and plumbing, and the installation of new fixtures and appliances to bring the kitchen up to code. A good portion of the money for the renovation was donated by community members.

“I’m amazed by the amount of support that the surrounding community has for Good Sam’s. When I came to Socorro, I was told ‘If you need anything, just ask,’” said Thomes. “It’s been true.”

If it’s true that the community has supported Craig Thomes, it’s also true that Craig Thomes has been a big supporter of the community. According to Terry Tadano, director of the Socorro County Chamber of Commerce, Thomes could be seen at just about every important community event.

Thomes’ next stop will be Greeley, Colo., where he’ll be in charge of the nursing home at a much larger facility. For Thomes, it will be a step up, with more responsibility.

“I’m pleased for Craig, but at the same time I’m sad for Socorro for losing such an energetic community member and leader,” said Tadano.

That sentiment was also expressed by Bottorf, “He will be sorely missed by many of us in Socorro.”

Thomes will be replaced by Interim Administrator Ruth Leitel, who arrives on Wednesday, Dec. 16.

Leitel will oversee the Socorro facility until a permanent replacement can be found.
