Marquez resigns position from co-op board

The Socorro Electric Cooperative Board of Trustees is one member short.

Manuel Marquez resigned his position as District 3 (Socorro) trustee late last month.

“I didn’t really want to, but I had some personal issues,” said Marquez, who declined to elaborate.

Marquez, who has served on the board for 29 years, said his resignation became effective April 1.

“I did my best while I was there,” said Marquez, a well-respected member of the community.

Marquez was elected to eight four-year terms on the board of trustees, the last was in 2008.

Now retired, Marquez said he worked 40 years at First State Bank in Socorro. He also spent about 30 years broadcasting Socorro High School football and basketball games alongside George Funkhouser.

SEC President Paul Bustamante said that Marquez submitted his resignation a couple of weeks ago, but his fellow trustees wanted him to take some time to think about it.

“We’re going to hate to lose him,” Bustamante said. “Manny was an asset to the board.”

Marquez is the SEC’s representative to the New Mexico Rural Electric Cooperative Association and sits on the board of several committees for the local co-op. He headed the wage committee and the annual meeting committee.

The annual meeting is set for Saturday, April 17.

Bustamante said Marquez’ position would not be filled right away.

“We leave it vacant at this point until the board acts upon it,” he said.

Bustamante added that the bylaws call for a district meeting to be held in Socorro within 90 days for the purpose of electing a replacement to serve out the remainder of the term.
