July 4th closures
Since the Fourth of July holiday falls on a Sunday this year, all city and county offices, landfills and banks will be closed Monday, July 5.
Regular business hours resume on Tuesday, July 6.
Animal shelter to hold Kitten Fest
The Socorro Animal Shelter will hold a Kitten Fest on Saturday, July 3, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, at the shelter.
Ten adorable kittens are ready to be placed in forever homes. There are Siamese, orange and black tabbys, stripes, whites and a blind special-needs kitten. See their pictures on the posters around town.
Adoption fees begin at $60 and include sterilization.

Sign-up meeting for fair contests
The Socorro County Fair and Rodeo Association has scheduled a sign-up meeting for the 2010 Queen, Princess and Sweetheart contest for Thursday, July 1, 7:30 p.m., in the administration building at the fairgrounds.
Girls who are interested in participating are invited to come to the meeting.
The Sweetheart contest is for girls ages 9-12; Princess for girls 13-15; and Queen for girls 16-23. Ages are as of Sept. 1 of this year.

Kellogg’s cereal recall
The Kellogg Company has issued a voluntary recall of certain breakfast cereals due to an uncharacteristic off-flavor and smell coming from the liner in the package.
Only products with the letters “KN” following the “Better If Used Before Date” are included in the recall. These products are distributed nationwide. To date, no illnesses have been reported.
The recalled products include select packages of Kellogg’s Corn Pops, Honey Smacks, Froot Loops and Apple Jacks.
