Mountainair Sunflower Festival set for Aug. 28
The Manzano Mountain Art Council has announced that it is in the final stages of planning for the annual Mountainair Sunflower Festival, which will take place on Saturday, Aug. 28, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in downtown Mountainair at the Dr. Saul Community Center other locations around the town.
This free event, which benefits the MMAC, offers an arts and crafts show, featuring local and regional artists and artisans; live entertainment by musical groups Sons of the Rio Grande, Amauta and El Mariachi Nacional; an art raffle, silent auction and a sunflower hat contest; and a lot of street vendors and fun things for kids.
Other things to see include the New Mexico Van of Enchantment mobile history exhibit, which will be parked at the Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument park office, just off Broadway in the center of town.
Visitors may also want to stop by the historic Shaffer Hotel, where the annual Poets & Writers Picnic will take place, providing an opportunity to hear the works of local and regional talent.
And of course, there will be sunflowers everywhere — both at the festival and along the town’s main streets and backcountry roads.

The Mountainair Sunflower Festival is sponsored by the non-profit Manzano Mountain Art Council and is made possible in part by New Mexico Arts, a division of the Department of Cultural Affairs, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
