Girl Scouts help animals

Girl Scout Troop 10035 will be holding a dog and cat food drive from Wednesday, Aug. 25, to Friday, Sept. 10, to support the Fur and Feather Animal Assistance in Datil.

For anyone who wants to donate dog or cat food, a drop-off box is set up at Parkview Elementary School.

Good Sam annual sale

Good Samaritan Village-Socorro will hold its annual rummage and bake sale on Saturday, Aug. 28, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the center, located at 1203 U.S. 60 West. There will be lots of furniture, household items, gently used clothing, food and baked goods, and more. Proceeds go to help remodel and update the Special Care Unit at the center.
The center is also looking for donations of gently used clothing, furniture, toys, household items and small appliances. No broken or non-operational items will be accepted.

Fair Queen contest

Contestants for the title of 2010 Socorro County Fair Queen, Princess and Sweetheart will compete on Saturday, Aug. 28, at the fairgrounds.
The Horsemanship Competition will take place at 9 a.m. in the rodeo arena, and the speech and modeling contests will take place at a banquet to be held at 6:30 p.m., in Kelly Hall.
The crowning ceremony will be held before the first rodeo on Friday, Sept. 3, 6 p.m., in the rodeo arena.

A reception for painter Skeeter Leard and Turned Wood Vessels by Jim McLain will be held at Marigold Arts at 424 Canyon Road, in Santa Fe, on Friday, Sept. 3, from 5-8 p.m.
