Warriors cross country teams setting sights on district meet
The Socorro Warriors cross country teams ran their sixth meet of the season at Los Lunas on Saturday, Oct. 9.
Although head coach Steven Montoya was absent for this meet, as he was in Hawaii running an Iron Man Triathlon in Hawaii, coaches Cody Lee and Chuck Zimmerly accompanied the team.
The Socorro boys ran close together, with the top five runners finishing within 38 seconds of each other.
Raul Contreras led the Warriors and placed 18th overall, finishing in a time of 18:47:95. He was followed by team captain Tim Abeyta, Sierra Cahall, Dylan Gallegos, Luke Malone and Brandon Raymond. The boys finished fifth out of eight teams and were the only Class 3A school in attendance.
“I’m really exited about the boys team,” said coach Lee, who also coaches track and field in the spring. “The most exciting thing was from Raul to the fifth place runner there was only 38 seconds in between all five.”
The Lady Warriors top runner, DamiAna Contreras, was suffering from a sore knee and was unable to run. But the SHS girls team managed without her and did well finishing sixth overall.
Dayna Guerro once again led the girls team, finishing sixth overall in a time of 21;25:52. She was followed by Nikki Mortensen, Angela Ellis, Brittani Webb, Cassie Parker, Leah Guengerich and Eli Ware.
“It is exciting to see them work hard,” Lee said. “Cassie and Eli really stepped up and got some experience.”
Coach Lee was impressed with the team’s performance.
“It speaks volumes for coach Montoya and his program. He has done an excellent job,” said Lee.
The Warriors have two more meets in Rio Rancho and Ruidoso to tune up for the district meet, which will be held in Ruidoso on Friday, Oct. 29.
