Warriors Win First District Game of 2010
Socorro High School’s football team battled Hot Springs through a tumultuous game for their first district win of 2010, beating the Tigers 35-20.
Neither team scored until with less than two minutes left in the first quarter when Nicolas Nunez scored the Tigers’ first touchdown of the game. Hot Springs’ Harding Schwab’s kick was blocked and the first quarter ended up with Hot Springs in the lead, 6-0.
The second quarter followed much the same pattern with several errors made by both teams, including turnovers resulting in no team reaching the end zone until with 40 seconds left in the half. That’s when Jared Marquez ran the ball in from 35 yards out scoring the Warriors’ first touchdown of the game. Zack Binger followed up with a perfect kick and the Warriors had a 7-6 lead going into halftime.
Although the first half of the game started out slowly, the second half of the game begun with an early touchdown by Zachary Esquivel after a 37 yard run. The kick by Binger brought the score to 14-6 with eight minutes left in the quarter.
The Warriors got a lucky break when Binger recovered his own kick and James Thornton scored on the first play after the turnover with an impressive 43 yard run, and the Warriors had stretched their lead to 21-6. Esquivel scored another touchdown with less than two minutes left in the quarter. Once again Binger added the PAT and at the end of the third quarter the Warriors were up 28-6.
Hot Springs wasn’t going down without a fight, however. Natividad Villa scored the Tigers seccond touchdown of the game one a nine-yard run. The point after touchdown failed, but Hot Springs had closed the gap to 28-12.
Hot Springs scored again when Nunez scored for the second time with less than five minutes left in the game. The Tigers attempted a two-point conversion and when Gregory Jaramillo caught the ball in the end zone that cut Socorro’s lead to 28-20. The Warriors put the game away when Esquivel scored his third touchdown of the game and Binger once again kicked the ball through the goal posts they sealed the Warrior win 35-20.
The Warriors play their next game on Friday, Oct. 29 at home against Silver. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
