Socorro, Quemado boys advance in state tourney, Mag girls done
Class 3A Boys
After falling behind by 10 points early, the Socorro Warriors were able to pull off a last-minute win over the Las Vegas Robertson Cardinals 54-51, on Wednesday, March 9, at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho. Robertson led by one point with only 14 seconds left on the game clock. A basket by Socorro’s Zach Esquivel saved the game and helped the fifth-seeded Warriors reach their goal of playing at the Pit in the Class 3A semifinals. The Warriors will take on top-seeded Hope Christian on Friday, March 10, at 8 a.m. at the Pit.
Class B Boys
The Quemado Eagles continued their winning ways with a decisive victory over Mosquero/Roy on Wednesday, March 9, in the first round of the Class B state basketball championships, played at Bernillio High School. Winning the game easily, the top-seeded Eagles (21-5) will take the momentum of their 77-48 win to the semifinals where they meet fourth-seeded Wagon Mound on Thursday, March 10, at Bernillio High School.
Class 2A Girls
The Magdalena Lady Steers were no match for top-seeded Texico in the Class 2A quarterfinals, suffering a 63-30 loss to end their season on Tuesday, March 8, at the Santa Ana Star Center. The loss comes after the Magdalena girls made an impressive comeback in their first round game against Mesa Vista on Friday, March 4. Texico moves on to play 13th-seeded Dulce, which beat fourth-seeded Rehooth in an overtime upset during the first round and fifth-seeded Estancia in the quarterfinals. Texico and Dulce play their simifinal game on Thursday, March 10, at 9:45 a.m. at the Santa Ana Star Center.
