Socorro High School graduate Johnny Chavez, Class of 2007, recently completed the rigorous 20-week course at the New Mexico State Police Academy in Santa Fe.
Graduation ceremonies were held in the Greer Garson Theater in Santa Fe on March 18. Of the 25 recruits that began the course, only 16 graduated. Chavez has been assigned to work in District 7, which is in the Taos/Española area.
Chavez is the son of Socorro native Debbie Lujan. He has a sister, Amanda, and a brother, Jeremiah.
Chavez is also known to his friends as “Chavo” and is well-known in Socorro as a three-sport athlete. He led his team to the class 3A semifinals in football in 2007 as their quarterback. In baseball, he often started as the pitcher and also played in center field. He has numerous home runs to his credit. Chavez also played point guard for the Warrior basketball team.
After graduating, Chavez attended Frank Phillips College in Borger, Texas, before transferring to New Mexico State where he attended school for two years before deciding to pursue a career in law enforcement.
