Artist reception at Peppers Art Gallery
The Old Timers Festival is the setting for Jo Knoblock Castillo’s eighth annual artist reception at Peppers Art Gallery, 100 E. First St. in Magdalena. The reception will be held from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 9.
Castillo has always had an interest in art and working with her hands. Whether it is cooking, sewing or making gifts, she is happy to be “doing.”
While living in Bolivia, Castillo finally rediscovered her love of painting — specifically landscapes and paintings that have connections to her life.
Castillo works in most media, but discovered she really enjoys the special luminosity of pastels.
“Pastel is my favorite media,” Castillo said. “They are tactile, bright, beautiful and long-lasting. Painting with a pastel in my hand is drawing and painting all at once. My artwork is always evolving. I learn something new each time I create a new piece.” Other than smudging if touched (pastel paintings should be framed under glass), they are very durable. The colors are clear and vibrant.
“I enjoy painting from life and use my own reference photos just as a reminder of shape or lighting,” said the artist.
Wine and cheese will be served at the reception and is a great time to meet Jo and see her new pastel and acrylic paintings in the exhibit.
In addition to the reception, Castillo will be painting and demonstrating on Friday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. One of the paintings will be given as a door prize.
All events at Peppers Art Gallery are free.
