Former judge brutally attacked
Socorro attorney and former 7th Judicial District Judge Tom Fitch was found severely beaten in his office at 715 N. California St. on Friday, Aug. 5.
City of Socorro Police Chief George Van Winkle said officers responded to a call at about 7:25 p.m. Upon arrival, officers found Fitch slumped over a desk and badly beaten.
Fitch was taken by ambulance to Socorro General Hospital and was then transferred to an Albuquerque hospital where he has since undergone surgery, the chief said.
The New Mexico State Police were initially called in on Friday to help with the investigation, and have since become the lead investigating agency.
According to New Mexico State Police Public Information Officer Major Daniel Lovato, Fitch is hospitalized with unknown injuries. Lovato wrote in an email that agents are investigating and following up on leads in the case.
