Letters to the Editor

Thanks to all who supported the fair
Editor:
I would like to thank the city of Socorro and the Socorro County Fair Board for all their hard work and dedication leading up to the Labor Day weekend fair rodeo and barrel race.

We had compliments from many, many contestants on the great arena conditions. That is a feat in itself, as barrel racers in particular are the first to critique the arena ground.
Having said that, I send out a huge thank you to the Socorro County Road Department, Socorro County Solid Waste Management, City of Socorro, and Mike Lucero for keeping the grounds watered on a continuous basis. A huge thank you to Danny Monette, Mike Jacobs and Lonnie Gonzales for the expert tractor work. Way to go guys. Thank you New Mexico Tractor Sales for the use of that great John Deere.
A huge thank you to the officers at the Socorro County Detention Center that supervised the inmates cleaning and repairing for several days leading up to the fair. The fairgrounds and rodeo arena has not looked this good in several years.
Of course it goes without saying, a huge thank you to the City of Socorro Fire Department and paramedics that stood by throughout our events to ensure the safety of all our cowboys and cowgirls. Another successful event with very minor injuries.
Thank you Sullivan Bucking Bulls for adding such an exciting event to our weekend. Your mini-bulls really added the finishing touch to both the rodeo and the Sunday barrels and bulls.
Thank you to all our wonderful sponsors. The weekend would not have been a success without you.
I look forward to hosting more barrel races and rodeos here in our great community in the near future.

Lawsuit was not members idea
Editor:
This is a response to Jimmy C. Crook’s letter that appeared in El Defensor Chieftain on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011. He says Socorro Electric Cooperative is under attack and he is right, it is under attack: by most members of the board of trustees.
The membership was sued by the board, at least by most of the board. So I think Mr. Crook got it backwards. Voting for new bylaws by members is not an attack but it was indeed viewed that way by the board members who wanted to preserve their “cash-cow.”
Mr. Crook is right again when he says the members own the co-op, but I’m less sure about all of our representatives “doing a good job.” I guess they are, but most are serving only themselves. He also mentioned legal fees. Keep in mind that the board hired the lawyers — not one but several — and that we get to pay them?
And somehow Mr. Crook left out Charlie Wagner, the only trustee who is working for the membership, when he listed the members of the board.
The letter by Ruth White, which appeared next to Mr. Crook’s, is closer to the mark.
Here are two questions I have: in what century is our legal system operating (will we still be writing letters in 2012? 2013?) and do those trustees really think they’re going to win this one?
