Bemis confirmed by Senate as Secretary of Energy, Minerals & Natural Resources Department
Santa Fe — The New Mexico State Senate unanimously confirmed John H. Bemis as secretary of the Energy, Minerals & Natural Resources Department last week. Bemis was selected by Gov. Susana Martinez as her choice for cabinet secretary-designate in March of 2011. A former assistant commissioner for oil, gas and minerals at the State Land Office, Bemis was confirmed on a 33-0 margin.
“Bemis’s broad experience in both the public and private sector has made him uniquely suited for this job,” Gov. Susana Martinez said in a press release. “He has already demonstrated his leadership overseeing the State Forestry response during last summer’s wildfires, visiting 21 of New Mexico’s 35 State Parks so far, and establishing a common-sense approach to working with the oil, gas and renewable energy industries.”
“I am honored and humbled by the trust placed in me by Governor Martinez and the New Mexico Senate,” Bemis said. “Our department affects everyone in one way or another in New Mexico from State Parks & Forests to Energy development. I look forward to continuing to work with the Legislature and the business community to develop and manage the precious resources of our state.”
Secretary Bemis has 20 years experience in private practice and corporate positions in the field of oil and gas law, along with many years of experience in state government. He is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and served eight years in the U.S. Army in Air Defense Artillery and Army Aviation positions. He attended the University of Notre Dame Law School and graduated in 1984.
