Magdalena boys 11th seed in tourney
The Magdalena High School boys basketball team is back in the NMAA state tournament, earning the 11th seed in this year’s Class 2A tourney. The Steers (18-10) will travel to Santa Fe on Saturday to play a first-round game against sixth-seeded Santa Fe Prep (22-6). Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
“We’re excited to be in the state tournament,” Magdalena head coach Jory Mirabal said during a phone interview on Sunday, shortly after the tournament brackets were announced. “Everybody wants to still be playing this time of year, so it’s exciting for us to get a chance to play this weekend.”
Mirabal said he doesn’t know much about the Blue Griffins.
“I heard a little about them. They’re obviously a good team,” said Mirabal. “They played Bosque earlier this year and I talked to their coach. They have a couple of big kids who can play, and they have a 6-1 guard who can play, too.”
Mirabal said didn’t know their names, but he’ll learn more about them during the week. He was expecting to receive some video tape of Prep at play by Tuesday.
Mirabal wasn’t too concerned about the Steers being seeded 11th in a 16-team field. There’s a lot of parity in Class 2A this year, he said.
“Laguna’s number one, and we’re right there with them. When we’re playing up to our ability, we’re one of the best teams in the state,” he said.
Top-seeded Laguna Acoma has yet to lose a game this season, posting a 23-0 record. The team that came closest to beating them was the Steers, who lost to the Hawks, 65-64, on Feb. 11.
Should the Steers get by the Blue Griffins, they’ll advance to the quarterfinals against the winner of the game between third-seeded Mora and 14th-seeded Dulce at Bernalillo High School on Wednesday, March 7.
