Low cost mobile vet clinic returns to Socorro

The Santa Fe Animal Humane Society’s mobile spay and neuter van will be in Socorro for three days this weekend. When the van was last in Socorro in October, with assistance from the city of Socorro and the city’s Animal Control Advisory Board, questions were raised about whether it was cutting into the business of local veterinarians.

This time, the van is here through the personal efforts of private citizens Jill Urban and Juanita Gordon, and with the sponsorship of a private benefactor. Gordon is hoping its presence this time will be less controversial.

Gordon said she believes one of the two local veterinary clinics, Animal Haven, has decided against doing low-cost clinics, and the manager of the other clinic, The Ark of Socorro, has given the project “her blessing.”

In October, the mobile van and its staff, with the help of numerous volunteers, was able to perform more than 100 spay and neuter procedures. Urban has been making appointments for local residents to bring their pets and take advantage of this second opportunity, stationing herself in front of Smith’s with clipboards in all kinds of weather for the past month, and most of the appointments slots are taken.

However, local residents can still take advantage of a reduced rate shot clinic being offered at the same time, from noon to 3 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The van will be parked at Cottonwood Valley Charter School on Neel Avenue, and all pet owners have to do is show up with their pets.

“You can leave your animals in the car and get in line for paper work,” Gordon said. “The clinic people prefer to go to the car. Less cat and dog fights.”

In addition to reduced rate shots for dogs and cats, pet owners can also get low cost deworming, heartworm testing and microchipping for their animals. No appointment is necessary, and all the money goes toward the cost of having the van in Socorro.
