Lady Warriors celebrate sixth straight state golf title win

The Socorro High Lady Warriors golf team officially wrapped up another impressive season on Thursday by honoring their own at the 2012 banquet at the Socorro High School commons area.

Coming off of their sixth consecutive Class 1A-3A championship, head coach Margaret Stanley recognized her players for earning well-deserved team and individual accomplishments.

Junior Kristen Cline this season earned her second individual title as she shot a two-round total of 151 at the University of New Mexico golf course during state competition. Cline won the individual title as a freshman in 2010, and in addition to her 2012 individual trophy she also won the District 4 (1A-3A) title as well as posting first place finishes at Grants and UNM. Cline has won four consecutive team championships as a Lady Warrior golfer.

Defending 2011 individual state champ and sophomore Shania Berger took second in state competition this year, shooting a two-round total of 158, just seven strokes behind Cline. Berger also took first place honors at Deming, Santa Ana, the Seery Invitational and the Leroy Gooch Ruidoso Invite.

Senior Brittani Webb placed third in the 2012 district tournament, earning all-district honors and placing fifth in state competition for the second straight year. During her high school career, Webb has also earned the privilege of being a part of five consecutive state championship teams.

Freshman Mia Salome earned all-district honors as well, placing fourth at the district tournament and tying for ninth at the state tournament with an overall score of 180.

Also playing as part of the state team, junior Theresa Chavez received all-district honors and finished in a tie for 22nd place at the state tournament. She shot an overall score of 200.

Stanley personally rewarded her squad by handing out the following team awards: Tenishia Guerro earned the Most Dedicated award, Mirjana Gacanich took home the trophy for most improved chipping and Chynna Pearson won the most improved scoring average by improving her score by an overall total of 18 strokes.

Teresa Lucero won the most improved putting award, Leanna Jojola won the team spirit award, Sarah Laine took home the sportsmanship award and Ashly Nash won the best listener award for a team that tied a record with 17 overall state titles.

Stanley has been chosen to captain a team of four players that will compete at the Girls Junior Americas Cup Team Matches in Hawaii at the end of the summer. The GJAC was established in 1978, and brings together some of the most talented young golfers from around the United States and the world to compete in a 54-hole tournament. This year’s version will take place at the Wailea Golf Club in Maui, from July 22-27.

Along with a committee from the Sun Country Golf Association, Stanley makes the selections for the roster that this year will include Lady Warriors teammates Berger and Cline, as well as Dominique Galloway from Cleveland High School in Albuquerque and Darian Zachek from Deming High School.
