Kittens up for adoption at discounted price
A Kittenfest adopt-a-thon will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, June 16, in front of Smith’s in Socorro.
Jill Urban and her husband, David, will have 12-15 kittens available for adoption that come from the Socorro Animal Shelter.
The Urbans normally offer kittens up for adoption on a weekly basis, but typically they only have three or four cats that need a good home. However, the shelter is currently experiencing an “overabundance of kittens,” says Urban.
So this weekend, the couple will have a few more options on hand for Socorro residents to choose from.
Saturday’s Kittenfest will also give cat lovers an opportunity to personally address an ongoing issue in the city when it comes to pet population.
“I think the first step is to spay and neuter,” Jill said. “All it takes is a couple of animals reproducing to have a problem.”
Another part of the problem is that spaying or neutering a cat can become an expensive process, and not everyone necessarily has the resources to do so. Luckily, the kitten adoption this weekend will offer the procedure at a discounted price.
Adoption fees for female cats, normally $80, will be discounted to $60, and adoption fees for male cats, which are regularly $60, will be $40. The cost includes the price of necessary shots as well as spaying or neutering. Anyone who adopts two kittens will receive a total discount of $50 off of the regular adoption price.
All of the kittens up for adoption are between the ages 2 and 4 months.
