Socorro athletes find fun, friends
The New Mexico Special Olympics State Games were held in Albuquerque on May 18-20, and Team Socorro brought back a medley of individual awards.
Brittany Soto won the gold medal in the 50 meter walk, Shawna Montoya won first place in both the 50 meter and 100 meter races and Paula Dillon won gold in the 25 meter wheel chair race and the tennis ball throw.
Sandra Serna and James O’Bannon both took first place in their respective 25 meter races as well as their respective softball throw events, while Richard Scroggins won gold in the softball throw and silver in the 25 meter race.
Dominic Castaneda and Christine Schwartzenberg both brought home gold medals in the 25 meter race and softball throw.
According to an email sent to El Defensor Chieftain from a parent, the team “enjoyed a weekend of making and renewing old friendships.”
