Cline wins Junior qualifier
The Rocky Mountain Junior Golf Tour held a qualifying event at New Mexico Tech Golf Course on Saturday, and some Socorro junior golfers took to the links in hopes of qualifying for the 2012 RMJGT Tournament of Champions.
Socorro High Lady Warrior Kristen Cline stayed true to her winning ways by taking first place in the Girls 15-18 Division of the one-round event. Saturday’s first-place finish came just eight days after Cline won the Junior Flight at the Socorro Open.
On Saturday, Cline shot a 5-over-par 77 to edge out Albuquerque’s Klara Castillo, who shot a 79.
Cline, along with Lady Warrior teammate Shania Berger, has qualified for the RMJGT Tournament of Champions that will be held at the McCormick Ranch Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Dec. 22-23.
In the girls 15-19 race for RMJGT Player of the Year, Berger currently sits in third place, having competed in five events, and Cline is tied for 10th place, having competed in one event.
Socorro’s Mia Salome also participated in the qualifier, shooting a 22-over-par 94 and finishing in seventh place.
In the boys 14-15 division, Sean Moore of Socorro tied for third place as he shot a 10-over-par 82. Albuquerque’s Sean Carlon placed first, shooting an even 72 for his round.
The next, and geographically closest, opportunity to qualify for the 2012 TOC will come on June 23-24 at New Mexico State Golf Course in Las Cruces.
According to the RMJGT website, players who finish in the top 10 of their age division at the conclusion of the 2012 tournament season qualify to play in the tour championship.
