Socorro vets match out-of-towners
This letter to the Chieftain is written to explain some things and to inform the community. It seems there has been some controversy stirred up by the Spay/Neuter van from Santa Fe that is scheduled to come to Socorro in August.
Claws and Paws Rescue has orchestrated bringing the van to Socorro, and should receive many kudos for their efforts to get as many animals spayed and neutered as possible. This, along with the long running efforts of APAS to help increase the affordability of surgeries, has greatly increased the number of animals that can be helped. In addition, both of the veterinary clinics in Socorro have signed on to a no cost cat spay and neuter program. So now people can make appointments at either local vet clinic at their convenience for a surgical appointment any day of the week with no lines and no waiting.
Though the clinics are not working with the van, the same service will be provided, here in town. Cats will be sterilized at no cost and dogs will be sterilized on a donation basis for qualifying owners. That is, those making under $40,000 a year.
This opportunity is available year round. The pet owner will call for a voucher that is sent form the “Kitty Zimmer” fund, and then deliver it, and their pet at their appointment time to the local veterinary clinic. In fact, the call for the voucher can be made at the vet clinics when scheduling the appointment.
The records will be kept locally with aftercare provided for any complications and the community will be well served. Even feral cats can be caught in live traps and brought to the vet clinics.
Would we, as veterinarians like to keep this as a local opportunity? Absolutely! So, for no cost cat surgeries and reduced fee dog surgeries pleas call one of your local vet clinics.
