POUND –  Mary  Elizabeth “Betty” Pound, 84, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 29, 2012, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Socorro, NM on Dec. 17, 1927, to Joe and Esther (Bourguet) Gianera. She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, Smokey Pound, and her infant son, Earl Joseph Pound. Betty was a lifelong resident of Socorro, the Ranch was her only home. The Ranch Headquarters says “Family” and that is how Betty will always be remembered. Everything Betty knew and instilled in her children was learned from her mother and father: perseverance and grit, hard work, respect and faith. Smokey and Betty brought up their children with the morals and values all learned from their love of the ranch. “If you take care of the land, with the help of the good Lord and mother nature, the ranch will take care of you.” She will always be remembered for her sharp wit and  her welcoming ways. She never met a stranger and she was a friend to all who knew her. Betty was a caretaker by nature, she was always giving to those in need and offering her home as a place of comfort there at the ranch. A devout Catholic, Betty’s faith was something that followed her in all of her days as she instilled the values of her heart in all of her family. Betty enjoyed volunteering her time with many youth groups such as Future Farmers of America and 4-H clubs. She was also named Honorary FFA state Chapter Farmer. In 2003, Betty was honored in the Past and Present Women of the West. Betty was once voted grand marshal of the Socorro County Fair. Her favorite past time was just simply visiting. She enjoyed having company and she adored every moment she shared with her children, her grandchildren, and her great granddaughter, Jenna who brought her the greatest joy she had ever known.
