Barrel race helps celebrate Labor Day
The National Barrel Horse Association held a Triple Crown Barrel Run on three days over Labor Day weekend at three different sites in New Mexico. Last Friday was Prewitt, Saturday was in Grants and on Monday Socorro played host to a Labor Day rodeo.
Exhibition closed at noon and the mini-bulls and senior bullriders started the afternoon off.
Socorro’s Logan Wilkinson took first place in the mini-bullriding competition while Trenton Fowler placed second. In the senior division, Justin Houston took first and Brandon Gibson placed second.
In the 1-D barrel race competition, Denise Chambliss placed first with a time of 17.7 seconds, and Kelly Waide and Kindee Wilson placed second and third behind her, respectively.
Marie Autrey won the 2-D, posting a time of 18.261, and Shawnda Elkins was fewer than two-tenths of a second behind her in second place. Waide finished in third with a time of 18.439 seconds.
The top three spots in 3_D were decided by fewer than two-tenths of a second as well. Shyann Garcia was in first at 18.794, JoAnn McNiel placed second with a time of 18.82 and Vicki Duron was third with at 18.910 seconds.
In 4-D, Lisa McWhorter placed first with a 19.769 posting, Susan Hitchcock came in second just behind her at 19.783 and Kendra Trujillo placed third with a time of 19.843.
According to the NBHA Website, the next sponsored event will be held in Moriarty from Oct. 12-14.
