Warriors fall to Ruidoso in ugly road opener
The gridiron Warriors just couldn’t get their offense in top gear amid the rain and the mud and the muck last Friday night as they dropped their 2012 road opener to Ruidoso, 19-10.
All of the scoring took place in the first half, with RHS (2-0) jumping out to a quick 7-0 just four minutes in when senior quarterback Bryce Pompos hit senior Ismail LaPaz from 28 yards out.
Socorro (1-1) evened things up just a minute into the second quarter when junior running back Zeb Esquivel broke free for a 42-yard touchdown run. Ruidoso took just 12 seconds to hop back on top, however, when senior running back Devon Carr reeled off an 80-yard score of his own and the home Warriors took the lead 13-7.
Zach Binger, senior quarterback and place kicker ,nailed an unbelievable 50-yard field goal with 8:05 left in the half to cut into the lead, but Carr powered in another touchdown run, this time from one yard out, to end the evening’s scoring with 5:35 left in the second quarter.
Socorro was held to just 37 yards through the air on a combined 4 for 12 with one interception, and mustered 79 rushing yards on 28 attempts. The Ruidoso defense held Socorro to 116 yards of total offense.
Ruidoso racked up 189 rushing yards on 45 combined carries and went 7 of 10 through the air for 123 yards with three interceptions, two of those by Binger.
