Socorro students gathered on New Mexico Tech’s athletic field on Friday afternoon for the tailgate party prior to the Black and Blue Rugby game of the Ancestors versus the Pygmies. Volunteers in red shirts handed out food to students as they lined up for hamburgers and hot dogs. All the students who attended received black shirts, said student activities officer Merline Montoya. The red shirts are for volunteers from students of various clubs.

Montoya said they asked students attending for their student ID numbers, to ensure each student received only one shirt. The student activities department brings shirts to all their events, she said.

Freshman Lucas Sandoval, Carmen Lacy and Chandra Sundaran enjoyed their first 49ers Homecoming event.

“I enjoy hanging out with my friends and homework,” Sundaran said. “This is my first event. I am also going to the waffle rave.”

“I’ve been so excited for everything.” Sandoval said. “I will also go to the waffle rave and casino night.”
