DELL WASHINGTON
Write-in candidate

Age: 66

Occupation: I am retired and have done extra acting in movies and have been a product manager of AT&T outside of the county. I worked at Bell Labs as a computer scientist, and was a university chairman and lecturer in Valencia County. I taught at the University of New Haven in the Political Science Department.

Education: Bachelor of Arts with honors in social thought and institutions from Stanford, as well as attended Yale Law School, but didn’t graduate.

Political Experience: Active Democrat, was former president of Democratic club in New Jersey. Chairman of the regular program and the Hopewell Democratic Party. Delegate to the New Mexico State Democratic Convention and a community delegate to the Democratic Convention in Denver.

Have you ever been arrested for a DWI or felony? No

Have you or your business ever filed for bankruptcy? No

What causes do you support?

The schools need a lot of help; there are a lot of teen suicides and students don’t feel they are important. Kids need to be told they are special, they are important and need to be supported.

I am for investing in micro loans. I don’t support fracking, which is when chemicals are pumped in the ground to extract gas. It kills people. I am for keeping the entertainment industry in New Mexico, and double digit wages. I am also for the environment and renewable energy.

What are some of the qualities to make you stand out compared to your opponent?

The position I am running for is state House representative. I care about people and avid interests. I have a better chance to support local causes and keep in touch with people. I am knowledgeable in education and business areas, and more knowledgeable in people issues. I am an outreach director for a women’s center, and a board member for the literacy council.

If elected, what bills or legislation would you introduce and/or support in the next legislative session?

I support New Mexico Finance Authority micro loans, as well as mom and pop enterprises. I want more funding for schools and programs, such as tutoring and teaching capitalism in school to promote self-esteem. I promote literacy in all three counties, and am for more funding to improve literacy. I support flood control and water issues, there is terrible flooding in Socorro, Valencia and Catron counties. And I support home nursing care.

Where do you stand on driver’s licenses for undocumented immigrants?

I want to keep tested and insured drivers on the road. The accidents have gone down. I am for testing licenses and insuring every driver on the road because it’s important.

Do you recommend changes to the lottery program?

I want to keep the lottery program — anything to keep scholarships for kids. The support for kids is gone, and lottery scholarships support them and I am for anything to help them get through college.

Why should citizens of the county choose you over your opponent?

I’ll represent them better; I am more concerned about issues that affect everyday people such as Federal issues to make things better concerning health care. I support medicaid and I support schools, senior citizens and local issues.

I want to repeal the current law.
