Chamber story contest promotes local shopping
In November 2011, the Socorro County Chamber of Commerce held its first Shop Socorro Story Contest, asking area residents to share why they think it's important to shop locally, right here in Socorro County. Throughout 2012, winning entries have been printed in the Chamber newsletter and on El Defensor Chieftain's Chamber page. The winners' reasons were varied and range from aiding the environment and helping to keep the local economy strong to saving money that they'd otherwise spend on gas or shipping charges.
The Chamber is hoping for an even greater number of entrants this year.
"We'd love to hear from more folks on why they think it's a good thing to do most of their shopping here in Socorro County," Chamber communications director Jennifer Polle said. "Last year we had nine winners receiving prizes of gift certificates to local restaurants and hardware stores."
To enter, write a paragraph or two describing your reasons for shopping locally or, alternatively, about a good customer service experience you've had at a local store or restaurant. There will be multiple winners and each will receive a gift certificate for a local restaurant or shop.
"You don't need to be an award-winning writer to enter — just take a few minutes and write something down," Polle said.
Send entries by email to email@example.com or drop them off at the Chamber office at 101 Plaza St. in Socorro. Past winners from 2011 are not eligible to participate. The deadline for entries is Nov. 23. The first winning entry will be printed in the Chamber's December newsletter as well as in El Defensor Chieftain.
