Tribe members return after more than 300 years
Over 250 people attended the welcome home Piro celebration held at El Camino Real International Heritage Center; about half were from out of state — visiting the area for the Festival of the Cranes.
Lunch served about 50 hot dogs and 160 hamburgers.
There were 28 Piro dancers and drummers, all members of the Piro-Manso-Tiwa tribe performing in native dress. Most of today’s Piros live in Las Cruces, El Paso and Socorro, Texas. Henry Torres is the tribal governor.
The Piro have asked if they could return to Socorro in September 2013 to celebrate their annual fiesta days. El Camino Real Center will sponsor this special event. Piros currently living in Pueblo, Colo., and Fort Smith, Ark., also plan to attend.
