Christmas comes to Socorro hospital’s programs
Casa Alegre Early Intervention and First Born Socorro are non-profit departments of the Community Based Programs of Presbyterian Healthcare Services – Socorro General Hospital.
The purpose of Casa Alegre is to provide evaluation, treatment and educational services to children of Socorro County from birth to age 3 with special needs. After an evaluation, families and staff work as a team to develop goals and activities to meet their child’s needs. Services include vision and hearing screening, motor therapy, speech therapy, the expertise of a developmental specialist and service coordination. Studies show that this age is the most effective time for intervention. The mission of Casa Alegre Early Intervention is to provide a strong foundation for future academic success.
The mission of First Born Socorro is to encourage and support happy, healthy babies and children in positive nurturing families. They also work to equip families with tools to prepare their children to enter school ready to learn and succeed and to prevent adverse childhood experiences (ACE), which are associated with disease in adulthood. This is a program that is open to any first time parent in Socorro County. We serve families preferably prenatally through 36 months of the child’s age.
Language development through early literacy is promoted by the Casa Alegre Early Intervention and First Born Socorro programs. Home visits are made to introduce the children and their families to books, stories, songs and rhymes. Handmade books and story props are left in the home for daily practice.
Approximately 140 families are served in Socorro County. Much needed support for equipment and supplies is being provided by the Socorro Rotary Club in conjunction with the Rotary Foundation.
This grant will provide board books, book making materials and educational items for Christmas gifts. Members of Rotary are working with Casa Alegre and First Born staff as well as student volunteers to make the books, prepare the gift bags and help distribute them at the annual Christmas party. Socorro Rotary has supported many activities of SGH –CBP such as the diabetes program, child safety seats to name but a few.
A Christmas party was held on Dec. 13 at Garcia Opera House to celebrate our families and the community that supports them. The Rotarians gave out gift bags, Santa was there and pictures were taken to the delight and horror of some.
