Warrior girls basketball
After beating Hatch Valley 45-34 on Dec. 18, the Socorro girls basketball team made the drive to Pojoaque Valley to take part in the 2012 Ben Lujan Tournament from Dec. 20-22. The Lady Warriors fell to Espanola Valley and Raton in the opening rounds, but ran past Penasco in the seventh place game after putting together a 20-point second quarter run. Socorro is now 5-5 on the season and will return to the hardcourt on Dec. 27 to play in the Village of Los Lunas Holiday Classic. The Lady Warriors tip-off against Del Norte at 9 a.m.

Warrior boys basketball
The Warriors boys also made the trip north to compete in the Ben Lujan Tourney, and Socorro notched itself an opening-round win over Mesa Vista, 64-48. Pojoaque Valley bested the Warriors in their rematch from Dec. 8, then Taos handed them a 53-27 loss in the third-place game. The 2-8 Warriors won’t play again until after 2012 when they travel to Estancia in an attempt to avenge a season-opening loss to the Bears. That game is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Jan. 3.

Quemada boys basketball
The Quemado boys basketball squad improved to 7-3 on the season when they cruised past Pine Hill 62-24 on Dec. 20, then recorded an 86-20 victory Alamo Navajo on Dec. 21. The Eagles are also off until Jan. 3 when they’ll travel to Ramah. The Mustangs beat Quemado 53-46 on Nov. 29.

The Quemado girls will head into the holiday break with a 4-4 record, as they also beat Pine Hill and Alamo Navajo, respectively, on Dec. 20 and Dec. 21. The Eagles beat the Warriors 55-29 and the Cougars 49-46. The girls also travel to Ramah on Jan. 3 in an attempt to avenge an earlier loss.

Other news
In other news, three Socorro football players have garnered post-season honors. Kicker Zach Binger was named to the New Mexico All-State Second team, while Adam Paz and Sam Boykin are head to the 2013 North-South All-Star game in July. Paz was selected as a defensive back and Boykin was chosen as a center.
The Magdalena football team will send a couple of its own seniors to the 6-man-1A All-Star Game being held in Albuquerque in June. Dylan Julian and Brent McKinley were both selected to play.
