Lady Warriors end year at Los Lunas Invitational

When it comes to scheduling, Lady Warriors head coach Marleen Greenwood isn’t shy about presenting her team with a challenge.

Jonathan Miller/El Defensor Chieftain: Socorro’s Bryahna Baca goes up for two of her 12 points against Del Norte on Thursday. The Knights won, 45-40.

As of this afternoon Socorro will have played seven games since Dec. 18, and Thursday it began the final push toward the New Year by taking on Class 4A Del Norte at the Village of Los Lunas Holiday Classic.

The Knights beat the Lady Warriors 45-40, but Socorro didn’t’ go down without a fight.

It rallied back from a late 39-30 deficit to tie the game with less than two minutes remaining, but Dal Norte hit free throws down the stretch and played solid interior defense to steal the victory.

Socorro dropped to 4-5 on the year while the Knights improved to 2-4.

There was by no means a lack of effort from Socorro considering their brutal schedule as of late and it played two consistent halves, but another three- or four-minute stretch filled with turnovers and empty offensive possessions ultimately did them in. In the opening moments of the fourth quarter the Lady Warriors coughed up the ball four straight times and allowed two big 3-point shots by Del Norte.

Greenwood said Socorro found itself in a similar situation against Raton, a game in which her squad had a 10 point lead, but a small stretch of turnovers and inconsistency cost them the game.

“It’s the timing in which we have those turnovers that is costing us games, so we’ve got to rectify that,” she said.

“We look like we just came off a tournament, went to Christmas and are back at it again. Everything is just one step slower than what we need it to be. I’m a little bit worried. Our press isn’t where it needs to be at this point in time so we talked about that. Hopefully we can get that rectified in the next two games.”

Bryahna Baca had 12 points for Socorro, Amanda Saenz and Ashton Monette both had eight and Madeline Chavez scored six points. Alanah Blackgoat led Del Norte with 13 points.

Socorro returns to action after the New Year on Jan. 4 when it travels to Laguna to take on the Hawks.
