Cougar boys snatch first win of season
The Alamo Navajo boys basketball team recorded its first win of the 2012-2013 season on Friday, beating Graceway Christian Academy in overtime, 78-75.
The victory came during the consolation semifinal of the Bean Valley Conference Tournament in Estancia. Brandel Padilla scored 34 points for the Cougars.
Alamo Navajo found itself down 45-23 at halftime, then 61-41 after three quarters. But the Cougars came storming back in the fourth, mounting a ridiculous comeback and outscoring the Lions 31-11 to send the game into overtime.
In the extra period the Cougars held Graceway to just three points and scored six en route to the win. Alamo Navajo is now 1-9 on the year.
Alamo had fallen to the host Bears on Jan. 10, 87-30, in the tourney's opening round. Padilla scored 16 in that contest, but was limited to just four points in a 98-21 loss to Native American Community Academy in the fifth-place game Saturday.
Still, the Cougars have that all-important victory under their belts, which could help as they near the onset of District 2-1A play at Menaul on Jan. 19.
The Alamo girls also participated in the BVC Tourney, beating the Estancia junior varsity 36-22 on Saturday to take seventh place. The ladies improved to 4-9 on the year.
Lukita Apachito scored 48 total points for the Cougars over the course of the weekend.
The Alamo Navajo girls will also open up district play at Menaul School in Albuquerque on Jan. 19. The girls' tipoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
