Casino night raises funds for Socorro Animal Shelter
The Disabled American Veterans holds a benefit casino night this Saturday to “feed the puppies,” DAV treasurer Paul Drake said.
The event is 5 p.m. Saturday to midnight. Admission is free and doors are wide open to the public at large.
Drake said the event features blackjack and Texas hold ‘em tables, plus free snacks.
“And all proceeds benefit the Socorro Animal Shelter … Feed the puppies!” Drake said.
Puppies are not the only population to benefit by the DAV’s gambling goodness; kittens at the shelter, as well as adult dogs and cats, also stand to benefit.
Drake said the DAV began having benefit casino night about six months ago. The first event benefitted Puerto Seguro, a local day shelter that provides essentials to homeless people and others in need. Drake estimated that event raised over $500.
The second benefit casino night was to raise funds for Socorro Storehouse, a local food pantry. Drake estimated they raised about $660 that time.
“And we hope to do more this time,” Drake said.
Drake said each DAV benefit casino night draws more gamblers for a good cause than the one before.
Drake noted he’s seen casino nights sponsored by other organizations that charge as much as $50 admission. He stressed that admission is free to any DAV benefit casino night, and the general public is welcome to come try its luck.
Drake said players need only to come in to the DAV — 200 N. Fifth St., just north of Socorro Electric Cooperative — and purchase chips to begin playing. Entrance is on the south side of the building, through a small enclosed yard area.
He said they will have three tables set up for poker and three for blackjack, and if more tables are needed, they will add more.
Drake said the Socorro Animal Shelter is one of the many charities the local DAV chapter donates to every Christmas. He said the casino night events are “just a little extra on top of that.” Chapter members choose a different charity to benefit with each casino night.
“Don’t forget — feed the puppies!” Drake said.
Drake added the DAV’s next bingo benefit is March 4. Bingo used to be weekly at the DAV, but is more like once every couple of months now. Proceeds from bingo benefits go toward veterans services, such as gas to take veterans to Albuquerque for medical services.
