Socorro cagers both get off to fast starts in district
Both the Socorro boys and girls basketball teams got off to good starts in District 3-3A play over the weekend as both teams beat Hot Springs Friday, then both squads turned around and beat Cobre on Saturday.
The boys traveled south on Interstate 25 for their matchup with the Tigers, and the game was all but decided by halftime. The Warriors hopped out to a 34-14 halftime lead then outscored Hot Springs 28-8 in the third quarter en route to a convincing 68-28 win.
No Tigers player scored in double digits, and Socorro held the host Tigers to just 21 percent shooting from the field and forced 23 turnovers. Hot Springs is 3-16 overall and 0-2 in league play.
The Warriors followed up that victory with a road win over the Cobre Indians on Feb. 2, 65-45. Socorro has now won four games in a row dating back to Jan. 19 and it has beaten those opponents by an average of 23 points. The Warriors will play host to Silver on Feb. 8 in a huge league matchup. A win would put them in the District 3-3A driver's seat.
Socorro is now 7-13 on the season and 1-0 in league play.
The Lady Warriors also opened up district play on the right foot as they recorded a 59-21 win over Hot Springs at home on Friday. The ladies also jumped out to a big halftime lead and cruised to the victory. The Tigers were held to single-digit scoring in every quarter.
Against Cobre on Feb. 2 Socorro outscored the Indians 38-6 in the second and third quarters combined on its way to a big 74-18 win. The Lady Warriors held Cobre scoreless in the fourth period.
With the win Socorro moved to 10-11 overall on the season and 1-0 in District 3-3A. The Lady Warriors travel to Las Vegas to take on 6-9 Robertson on Feb. 12.
