Body recovered from Rio Grande near Bernardo
Socorro County Sheriff’s deputies, the Abeytas Volunteer Fire Department and New Mexico State Police officers responded to a report Wednesday of a human body discovered near U.S. 60 in the Rio Grande not far from Bernardo.
The case is being treated as a suspicious death by investigators, according to a news release issued Thursday by the state Department of Public Safety.
Socorro County Undersheriff Les Torres said the body was discovered about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday by a woman who stopped at a bridge on U.S. 60 to look at the river. The woman spotted what appeared to be a body in a bag in the water near the bridge.
Torres said Socorro County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to the scene, along with the Abeytas VFD, and confirmed it was a body in the bag. The sheriff’s department then turned the investigation over to state police to process through the NMSP crime lab.
New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau personnel from Zone 3 Albuquerque responded to the crime scene, according to the DPS news release. The NMSP Crime Scene Team and Dive Team were also activated.
Torres said the NMSP Dive Team pulled the body out of the river about 9 p.m. Wednesday. He did not know if the body was male or female.
Identification of the body was not possible at the scene, according to the DPS news release. The body was transported to the Office of the Medical Investigator in Albuquerque for an autopsy to determine cause of death and identification.
The investigation is active and ongoing at this time, and investigators urge anyone with information on this case to contact the New Mexico State Police office in Albuquerque at 505-841-9256.
