Post office to keep Saturday hours
The U.S. Postal Service’s plan to stop Saturday mail service will not affect package and post office box deliveries, nor Saturday window hours at either city or rural post offices, according to the Postal Service’s Western Area corporate communications manager Brian Sperry.
Beginning in 2013, the Postal Service’s POST plan reduced window hours for some small-volume post offices, but Saturday window service will not be cut nor eliminated, Sperry said.
Local post offices facing reduction in weekday window hours include those at Lemitar, Luna, Pie Town, Polvadera, San Acacia, San Antonio and La Joya.
In February, the Postal Service announced its plans to cut Saturday letter delivery to homes and street mailboxes, including mailboxes served by rural carrier routes. Six-day service for all mail will continue to mailboxes in post office buildings. Packages will continue to be delivered six days a week to all customers. The new schedule will be implemented Aug. 5. The changes will save the Postal Service approximately $2 billion annually.
