Magdalena Ranger District planning prescribed burn
The Cibola National Forest and Grasslands’ Magdalena Ranger District is planning a prescribed burn. The 80-acre Hop/Paterson Pile burn is expected to start the week of March 11 and will continue until completed, depending on weather and vegetation conditions.
The goal of this burn is to eliminate existing piles of timber debris (slash) and to prevent the threat of potential wildfire. The prescribed burn is located in the northwest aspect of the Magdalena Mountains, approximately 5 miles south of Magdalena, in the Hop Canyon area. The dominant vegetation in the area is ponderosa pine, and piñon/juniper with light to moderate grass cover.
Prior to igniting the burn, the Magdalena Ranger District will ensure that there is a favorable weather forecast and that the required personnel and equipment are on hand. Fire management crews will monitor the burn for as long as necessary to ensure public safety.
During this prescribed burn, there may be delays when traveling forest Road 101. There will be additional fire vehicles patrolling and monitoring the area.
Drive carefully when on these roads, as visibility might be lower due to smoke. Use caution and drive with your headlights on.
