MATTAX – Jason Paul Mattax passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 24, 2013, in Socorro surrounded by his family and loved ones after his long battle with brain cancer (Glioblastoma multiforme). Jason was born in LaGrande, Ore., on July 5, 1983. He spent his early years in Concord, Calif., and the rest of his childhood in Sammamish, Wash., graduating from Redmond High School. Jason moved to Socorro where he attended New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, receiving his bachelor’s degrees in math and computer science, and master’s in computer science; he was continuing his education toward a master’s in mathematics. Jason lived life to the fullest, even after being diagnosed with cancer. He enjoyed bike riding, hiking and the outdoors, along with seeking a thorough understanding of all matters, including God. He was employed as a computer scientist for NMIMT. He served in his church and volunteered at the local food bank. Jason married Heather McNeil on July 18, 2009, who survives him. He is also survived by his parents, Brian and Sharon Mattax; his brother Andrew Mattax; and sisters Esther and Abigail Ruggles, along with many friends, family and extended family in the Lord. All friends and family are invited to attend the funeral services to celebrate a loving and giving man who left his earthly home to be pain free and at peace in the loving arms of his Lord. A graveside service was held Sunday, April 28, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. in the Socorro Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions and donations may be made in Jason’s honor to Angel Flight West, which provided many flights for medical appointments for Jason’s treatment in California, at www.angelflight.org or the Socorro Storehouse Food Pantry at www.foodpantries.org-Socorro. HILL – David A. Hill, 70, dad, papa, brother and friend, left this earth for greener pastures Friday, April 26, 2013. ZAMORA – Cofa Zamora, a true angel, has gone home to receive her wings. Cofa, 88, leaves behind daughter Ann Roman; son Paul Zamora; granddaughters Monica, Crissy, Julie and Stephanie; grandsons J.P., Matthew and Daniel; and great-grandsons Vincent and Che. Viewing and rosary services were held Sunday, April 28, 2013, at Adair Funeral Home Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Northern Ave. at Magee. SERNA – Julie Andra Serna (Gonzales), 42, passed away Friday, April 19, 2013, in Stafford County, Va. She was born in Socorro on Oct. 2, 1970, to Rey and Maryetta (Baca) Serna. Julie spent all of her childhood here in Socorro. She was always athletic and very outgoing. She graduated from Socorro High School, Class of 1989. Julie earned her bachelor’s degree in human performance and business from New Mexico Highlands University. She resided in Las Cruces for a brief time before moving to Virginia. Julie had such a genuine heart, always serving and truly loving others. She was of a strong Catholic faith and continually trusted in the Lord’s wisdom to lead her day by day. Julie always looked for the good in people and was always able to see the silver lining in times of struggle. She was so loving, giving of herself, faithful and forgiving, and she had a way about her that was pure devotion to caring and supporting others. Julie never met a stranger; she was friends with anyone she ever met. She was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother and friend. She loved to sing and you can see her witty sense of humor in her beautiful boys, who were her life. Julie will always be remembered and admired for her beautiful smile and heart. She was preceded in death by her grandparents Robert and Terry Baca, and Ray and Mary Serna; and her great-grandmother Julianita P. Serna. Julie is survived by her loving parents, Rey and Maryetta Serna, of Socorro; her devoted sister Allegra Lujan and husband, Isaac; her beautiful children Christopher and Aiden Gonzales; many aunts, uncles, cousins and other loving family members; and many close friends. A holy rosary will be recited Friday, May 3, 2013, at 7 p.m. at San Miguel Catholic Church, 403 El Camino Real, Socorro. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated Saturday, May 4, 2013, at 10 a.m., also at San Miguel Catholic Church with Father Andrew Pavlak as celebrant. Inurnment will take place in the San Miguel Catholic Cemetery following the service. Pallbearers are Danny Baca, Robert James Baca, Evan Ray Serna, Vincent Robert Serna, Julian Serna, Joe E. Baca and Bobby Gonzales. Honorary pallbearers are Christopher and Aiden Gonzales, the Socorro High School Class of 1989 and all those who loved Julie.
