Local woman recognized for saving life
It was after dinner on a warm September night at the Smith’s Food and Drug store in Socorro.
Baby Romeo was limp and blue. His parents were frantic. Lucky for Romeo, who was about 12 months old, a new checker, Rachel Herrera, knew what to do.
Herrera was honored for her heroic actions at the 2013 Red Cross Real Heroes Award Breakfast on May 21, along with other real life heroes who display extraordinary courage and commitment in saving or improving the lives of others.
Ellen Welker, the local Red Cross agency’s development manager, said the agency received 54 nominations for the dozen or so hero awards.
“I am touched by the generosity of spirit and compassion of heart among these heroes,” Welker said. “I am most honored to be a part of the American Red Cross in New Mexico.”
