Young golfers qualify for State Championship
Fifteen-year-old Sean Moore of Socorro had a terrific round of golf at New Mexico Tech Golf Course last weekend during the New Mexico-West Texas Optimist Qualifier, shooting one over par.
Sean started the front nine with a par on one of the longest par-5s on the course followed by a birdie on the second, a par-4. He finished the front nine with pars taking him to one under at the turn. The back nine was more challenging for Sean. He made one double and two bogeys, but was able to counter them with two birdies.
The scores were higher for the older girls division this year. Last year Kristen Cline took home first place. This year she took second place and will also represent the District at the Championship. Cline’s winning score was 77 last year. This year, Mary Weinstein finished first with a score of 80, two scores of 40 on both the front and back. Mary had played mainly bogey and par golf and snuck in a birdie on the par-5, number 12. Kristen unfortunately did not have any birdies this round, which was unusual for the junior. She had a total of 8 bogeys, five of which came on the back nine. An 84 is certainly a great score on the challenging course and high-pressure circumstance.
The tournament is part of the Rocky Mountain Junior Golf Tour. Both Moore and Cline will represent their age districts at the championships, which will be held the end of December in Scottsdale, Ariz.
