Socorro youth take Junior Olympic track championship
Socorro youth once again prove their prowess in track and field events, this time in the USA Track and Field Junior Olympics New Mexico State meet on June 22 and 23.
The 9- and 10-year-old girls 4×400 meter relay team won the state championship. Relay team members include Garee Celine Apodaca, Marysa Ocampo, Lola Apodaca, and Elise Madril. Ashlyn Agular took the state championship in the mini-javelin throw for the 11- to 12-year-old group, and Dezarae Armijo brought it home for the 17- to 18-year-old girls.
These athletes have earned the right to compete in the Region X events, which will be held in Mesa, Ariz. on July 5 through 7. In addition to the 4×400 meter relay, the 9- and 10-year-old girls team will also participate in the 4×100 meter relay. Alyssa Agular also qualified to participate in the mini-javelin throw in the 9- and 10-year-old division, as did Jordan Armijo in the boys 9- and 10-year-old division. Mike Armijo qualified in the 100-meter dash, the 400-meter dash and the long jump for the boys 15- and 16-year-old division, and Dezarae Armijo qualified in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash.
America’s next generation of track and field stars compete throughout the summer-and over 6,000 of these athletes qualify for the USATF National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships held during the last week of July. Entry for the national championship is based on athlete performances at preliminary, association, and regional levels.
The city of Socorro funds the program for Soco Competes, the local USA Track and Field Junior Olympics team, including entry fees, uniforms, and event equipment and supplies. However, their budget does not allow for travel expenses to regional and national events. Coach Damien Ocampo and coach Cody Lee are holding a raffle to raise funds for room, board and travel expenses for the youth to participate in the Region X events.
Drawing tickets are $5 each and available by calling Coach Lee at 505-307-6415. The drawing for cash prizes of $200 and $100 will be held on July 4.
