Catch of the season at Socorro Bass Club tournament

Fishing had been slow at Elephant Butte for the previous week. In fact, it has not been a stellar season for bass fishing at all. So when William Sanchez reeled in a 8.25-pound black bass on Sunday, he had anglers begging for details. Sanchez wasn’t telling much, but he did tell his fellow anglers that he was fishing with a Senko when he caught it.

“I have seen an 11-pounder pulled out of the lake, but this is the biggest we’ve had in a couple of years,” tournament coordinator Ron Gilworth said of Sanchez’s catch on Sunday.

Sanchez won Sunday’s Socorro Bass Club Tournament with 10.50 pounds, and received the “big fish” award with his 8.25-pound black bass.

Two non-boaters took home second and third places this past weekend. Richard Vigil won second place and the non-boater pot, and Billy Beall, also a non-boater, took home third place. Bobby Beall came in fourth. Randy Campbell took fifth place, but captured the Angler of the Year award with great overall fishing for the season and great club participation, and Ron Gilworth, who placed sixth in Sunday’s tournament, was given the Angler of the Year runner-up award.

Aug. 3 and 4 is the Club Championship.

“The water level is now stable, and the fish should be turned on,” Gilworth said. “No reason not to come out and fish.”
