DoH offers free well water testing
Providing free water quality testing, the Department of Health and the New Mexico Environment Department will be at the New Mexico Tech Fidel Center from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 25.
Residents of Socorro, San Antonio, Magdalena and surrounding communities with private wells serving homes not connected to a public water utility can take water in for testing.
To collect a water sample, use a clean glass or plastic container that holds at least a liter of water. Do not use containers that have a strong odor such as citrus or pickle jars.
Collect the sample before it passes through any water treatment systems such as reverse osmosis, a water softener or carbon filter.
Let the water run for a couple of minutes before collecting the sample. Collect the sample as close to the time of testing as possible and cover the container with a clean lid.
If available, provide well depth, depth to water, well casing material and distance from well to the nearest septic tank/leachfield system.
Limited analysis will be performed the same day and further results can be picked up or mailed out.
Drinking water will be field tested for electrical conductivity, iron, fluoride, nitrate, pH, sulfate and arsenic.
