Family reunion celebrates couple married in 1916
Gabriel and Palajeres Silva were married at San Miguel Church in Socorro on June 26, 1916. The marriage began a Silva legacy, honored this year with a reunion held in July.
While planning the reunion invitations were sent out to all family members located all over the USA to include Puerto Rico and Okinawa Japan, said Jerry Silva, one of the planners.
“The response was incredible,” he said. “One of our main objectives was to honor our city for the gratitude shown to us by making sure that we spent our monies locally as much as possible.” The 187 Silva family members who poured into Socorro ate at establishments, socialized at local bars, rented reunion facilities and printed our programs locally,” Jerry said.
“I can honestly say the Silva Family accomplished our objective,” he said.
Several family members received a proclamation from the city of Socorro honoring the reunion.
At San Miguel Church Cemetery family members met to clean, place flowers and record family plots for historical purposes.
The main reunion event held July 3, involved family members making presentations and receiving awards including a trubute to active service family members and their spouses as well as those who served in the past.
“Overall, I can honestly say we accomplished what we set out to do,” Silva said. “We had a reunion that our family and friends will be talking about for a long time with memories of loved ones departed and those who will continue the legacy.”
