Tech’s parking lot project intrudes on neighborhood
Editor:
I would like to acquaint the residents of Socorro to a major project within the city of Socorro, which may have gone completely unnoticed.
New Mexico Tech, through a Tech operative group, has acquired a large parcel of property along College Avenue, and will construct a parking lot there.
Not just any parking lot, but a HUGE parking lot the size of a WalMart parking lot, AND construct this within a Residential Neighborhood! Totally inappropriate!
Public knowledge of this project, only “came to light” one week ago, but construction has already started.
We, the city of Socorro residents who live around this huge project, were never informed, surveyed, or had any opportunity to present input or concerns.
Therefore, we have organized as the Save Our Neighborhood Coalition to exercise our right to speak. We have circulated a petition to have this project halted, and have our comments presented at our Socorro City Council and Planning and Zoning Committee meetings.
On July 29 I presented this petition to the city of Socorro, informed them that work was already in progress and we wish to exercise our right to express concerns on this potentially damaging project within our residential neighborhood.
We are very unhappy that no consideration was given to potential environmental, social and financial impacts, to those neighbors who reside around this project.
All of us living within in the city of Socorro have the right to protect our homestead from potentially damaging construction projects.
