New face at Dr. Beers office
When Galen Detrik went to New Mexico Tech and majored in biology, he thought he wanted to be a doctor.
But then he got some experience under his belt, watching doctors and working in different environments. When he shadowed dentist Dr. Duane Beers in Socorro, he changed his mind.
“I loved it,” Detrik said.
Now Detrik is back in Beers’ office, this time as a fellow dentist. He started about a month and a half ago.
Originally from Placitas, Detrik worked with Beers as an assistant for six months when he graduated from Tech, then went home to help his father in the construction business. After two years he was off to Denver for dental school.
Now, he’s back in Socorro as a full fledged dentist.
Dentistry offers the opportunity to work with people for more than a 10 minute interaction, Detrik said.
“You don’t send them away with a prescription; you help people,” he said. “Instant gratification.”
Detrik said he loves how Beers keeps on the cutting edge of technological advances in the field yet doesn’t go for every new gadget but investigates everything carefully.
“He really checks it out,” Detrik said. “I love it — am fascinated by it, actually.”
Eventually Detrik would like to work overseas and be a mission dentist. He has already served on missions in Guadalajara, Costa Rica and Mexico.
“There is so much need out there,” he said. “Of course there is need here too.”
But he is happy here in Socorro.
“There is something about a small town allure,” Detrik said.
At the Beers office, Detrik sees the new patients and does triage work with established ones.
He said he doesn’t think Beers is planning to retire any time soon.
“He’ll probably die in the dental chair,” Detrik said. “I think the people are really blessed to have him here. He is extremely talented. I think it’s incredible for Socorro to have that.”
Of the work they do at Beers’ office Detrik said they are not there to get rich.
“We are given a gift,” he said. “It’s a fun field.”
