Nick “Nicky” M. Montoya, age 49, of T or C, entered eternal life Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013, at University Medical Center in El Paso, Texas. He was born May 26, 1964, in Socorro to Richard Felix and Dorothy Jean Nuanes Montoya. Nicky was a contractor and a member of the Roman Catholic Church. He was a loving son, father, grandpa, brother, uncle and friend, known by all for his hard-working skills, but most of all for his big heart.
Survivors include his daughter Julia Shrader, her husband, Kalvin, and Nicky’s grandchildren Lane and Drew, of Edgewood; his parents; his brother Michael Montoya (children Jaime, Jennifer and Janessa) and wife, Carla, of Albuquerque; his sister Cassandra Benjamin and husband, Si, and their children Cole and Laci, and her children Clint and Colt, of Magdalena; and niece Hope Montoya and children A.J. and Felicity, of Las Cruces. Other survivors include his former wife, Becky Latasa-Harvey, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his nephews Clint Benjamin and Mikey Montoya.
At his request cremation has taken place under the direction of Baca’s Sunset Crematory of Las Cruces. Services for Nicky were held on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in T or C.

Lavella Ann Mercer, 67, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013. She was born in Los Lunas on Sept. 12, 1945, to C.C. and Bill Zimmerman. She was a lifelong resident of Socorro, and many people will fondly remember her for her sharp wit. Lavella was a friend to anyone she ever met. She loved to sew and quilt. Lavella loved roses, but didn’t care so much for the yard work. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister Maxine Thomas; and her brothers Jack, Bob and Tom Zimmerman. Lavella is survived by her devoted son Mark L. Mercer, of Socorro; her loving daughter Shirley Perkins and husband, Eddie, of Norwood, La.; her brother Larry Zimmerman and wife, Bev; her sister Janet Brown and husband, Benny; and many nieces, nephews, other loving family members and close friends. Lavella also enjoyed her granddaughter Courtney Jennings and two great-grandchildren, R.J. and Koda Lee.
