Our Lady of Sorrows parish in La Joya will hold its annual fiestas beginning Saturday at 6 p.m. vespers and Sunday at the 10:30 a.m. Mass. Faith and Science lecture series begins the year’s lectures Sept. 19 with Dr. Brian Gurbaxani, an engineer in physics and microbiology and senior scientist at the Centers for Disease Control. Gurbaxani will speak at 7 p.m. at St. Paul’s Methodist Church, 1000 Goad St. Snacks will be served.

Flamenco guitarist Ottmar Liebert and his band, Luna Negra, will open the New Mexico Tech 2013 – 2014 Performing Arts Series season with a performance at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 20 at Macey Center. Sept. 23 the Presidential Chamber Music Series I: String Quartets performs at 7:30 p.m. at the Macey.

Presidential Chamber Music Series, a program that brings to town talented musicians to perform works by classical and contemporary composers, celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. The first concert in the series will be at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 23 at the Macey Center at New Mexico Tech. Series concerts are free to the public.

Tienda de Segunda Thrifty, 400 Spring St., accepts donations of furniture, clothing, kitchen appliances and more. Thrifty cannot accept broken or dirty furniture, and has no facilities to wash clothing so donations need to be clean. All workers are volunteers, and sales revenues are donated to senior programs in Socorro County. The store is open noon to 4 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
